How to start collecting Pokémon cards
Just getting started? Collecting Pokémon cards is easier (and cheaper) than it looks once you have a plan. This guide takes you from zero to your first organised collection.
1. Decide what you want to collect
The most common mistake is trying to 'collect everything' at once. Pick a goal first; you can always expand it:
- Your favourites: just the cards of your favourite Pokémon or type. Cheap and personal.
- A specific set: completing every card in one expansion. The ideal middle ground to start with.
- A master set: every variant of a set (normals, reverse holos and secret rares). The biggest challenge.
- By Pokédex: one card of each Pokémon, regardless of set. Very visual.
2. Learn to read a card
Before you buy, understand three things you'll see on every card: the collector number (at the bottom, tells you which card it is within the set), the rarity (the symbol: circle = common, diamond = uncommon, star = rare) and the variants (the same card can exist as a normal, reverse holo or secret rare). 3. Protect your cards from day one
Cards scratch and bend easily. With a basic sleeve (penny sleeve) and, for the best ones, a rigid sleeve (toploader) or a quality binder, your collection stays like new for years. You don't need to spend much:

4. Organise your collection
